Polarization homogenizer based on freeform microlens array
Abstract
This study presents an integrated polarization homogenizer based on a freeform microlens array (MLA) designed to meet the demand for highly uniform and customizable polarized illumination in active detection systems. By optimizing the configuration of freeform sub-lenses, the device enables precise polarization light field modulation within a short working distance. A dedicated stray light suppression model is incorporated to improve operational stability. Experimental validation shows irradiance uniformity of over 90% within a compact form factor of 25×25×18.25 mm³. The system allows reconfiguration of diverse polarization light fields simply by switching polarization films and subimage masks, without the need to replace optical elements, thereby significantly reducing cost. Both numerical simulations and practical tests verify the device’s high precision in light field control, robustness in engineering applications, and cost efficiency, offering a promising solution for next-generation polarization-sensitive detection systems.
