Image super-resolution for microscopy using generative adversarial networks
Abstract
Image super-resolution (SR) technology aims to recover high-resolution images from low-resolution inputs, with significant applications in microscopy where obtaining high-resolution images is often limited by hardware constraints, photobleaching concerns, or acquisition speed requirements. This research proposes a GAN-based super-resolution method specifically optimized for microscopic imaging. The approach employs a generator to produce high-resolution microscopy images while utilizing a discriminator to evaluate their authenticity. Through this adversarial training process, the model effectively captures fine details and textural information in microscopic specimens, demonstrating particular strength in recovering edge details and complex cellular structures. Preliminary experimental results indicate that compared to traditional interpolation methods, our GAN-based super-resolution approach better preserves detailed information in microscopic images, with notably more realistic and natural reconstruction of complex textures and cellular boundaries. This improvement enables researchers to perform more accurate quantitative analysis and visualization of subcellular structures without requiring additional imaging time or increased light exposure that might damage sensitive biological samples. While training benefits from high-performance GPUs, the model architecture is efficient enough to be trained effectively within a reasonable timeframe on common prosumer or mid-range GPUs. This approach lowers the barrier to entry for many research labs without access to specialized GPU clusters.
