Extensions of bilateral filter for intra-prediction improvement in ECM

As the demand for higher compression efficiency continues to grow, the Joint Video Experts Team (JVET) has been exploring advanced video coding technologies beyond the capabilities of the Versatile Video Coding (VVC). This paper presents extensions of bilateral filtering (BF) to enhance intra prediction by applying it to Regression-based Spatial Geometric Partitioning Mode (R-SGPM) and by introducing a blending adaptive condition that adjusts its applications according to the prediction mode. The experimental results show that the proposed methods give meaningful BD-rate gain compared to ECM18.0.
