Abstract

This study investigates how differences in image resolution affect regions of visual fixation using images at 4K and 2K resolutions. Participants were presented with images of food, people, and outdoor scenes, and their gaze was recorded. The results show that higher resolution can lead, depending on image content, to more localized fixation regions or to the emergence of new fixation regions that do not appear at lower resolutions. We also compared several representative saliency-based gaze prediction models with the empirical gaze data and found clear discrepancies. This tendency was particularly pronounced under the 4K condition, which is to some extent an expected outcome given that many existing models are designed primarily under the assumption of lower resolutions. These findings therefore highlight the need to develop high-accuracy gaze prediction models that explicitly account for image resolution.
