Abstract

Fermi energy plays an important role in determining the properties of materials in quantum physics. It can be considered as a type of barrier that resists changes within the material. This paper adapts the concept of Fermi energy to the analysis of disaster events. A risk barrier, also can be used as a risk index, is developed based on the Fermi–Dirac distribution where the Fermi energy is a key parameter. By slightly modifying, the Fermi–Dirac distribution can be transformed into logistic distribution used in statistics. In this transformation, the location parameter of the logistic distribution corresponds to the Fermi energy in the Fermi–Dirac distribution. This location parameter is then interpreted as the proposed risk barrier. The risk barrier represents the resistance to disaster occurrence. Higher barriers correspond to a lower probability of a disaster event. In this paper, two numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the evaluation of the proposed risk barrier.
