Microstructure and compression behavior of Ti-6Al-4V and AlSi10Mg X-type lattice structure fabricated by additive manufacturing
Abstract
Although the development of novel metal lattice structures presents an effective pathway for component lightweight and cost efficiency, challenging still exists in the matching of material selection with structure design. In this work, the microstructures and compressive properties of X-type lattice structures made of Ti-6Al-4V and AlSi10Mg by selective laser melting (SLM) were investigated. Through a comparative analysis of microstructure characterization, macroscopic fracture, and finite element (FE) simulations of the quasi-static compression process, the underlying deformation mechanisms of them are elucidated. It demonstrates that the Ti-6Al-4V lattice structure failed by shear fracture at the support rod nodes, whereas the AlSi10Mg lattice underwent progressive plastic collapse. The results indicate that the Ti6Al-4V structure had a superior load-bearing capacity, while the AlSi10Mg structure exhibited a distinct advantage in energy absorption. This research paves a theoretical and practical approach for material selection and the lightweight design of lattice structures.
