Dynamic event evaluation in the modern Olympics: quantifying inclusion criteria via AHP modeling
Abstract
In order to adapt to the trends of the times and attract a global audience, particularly young viewers, the IOC needs to adjust the sports, disciplines, or events (SDEs) in the Olympic Games. This paper develops models based on the AHP method to evaluate the SDEs, and to determine whether they could be included in Olympics. Firstly, based on a comprehensive analysis, we select several indicators to address the IOC Criteria for Sports Inclusion. Then with the diversity of indicators and the significant differences in their relative importance, we construct eleven primary indicators from secondary indicators by using the Sigmoid function for normalization. Then, we establish the SDEs Evaluation Model using the AHP method. This model involves creating a weight judgment matrix, calculating the weights of each indicator, and ultimately deriving a comprehensive SDEs Evaluation Index for each sport. We test our evaluation model by assessing SDEs added or removed from recent Olympics. The results demonstrate that our model accurately reflects the actual situations of these sports.
