Fabric design based on traditional Chinese folk looms
Abstract
The fundamental reason why traditional Chinese folk looms and modern looms cannot share looming drafting lies in the distinct loops-heddles lifting mechanisms. Traditional folk looms employ dual loops-heddles interactive structure, which enlarges the shed for easier weaving, but limits the number of loops-heddles to either two or four. Consequently, traditional Chinese fabrics are restricted to geometric patterns. Traditional Chinese looms with two loops-heddles can produce richly colored geometric patterns through the color and weave effect. Moreover, fabric patterns designed for modern looms can be adapted for use on traditional Chinese looms simply by altering the front-to-back sequence of the loops-heddles. In contrast, traditional Chinese looms with four loops-heddles, where each pair interacts, can only weave relatively simple and symmetrical patterns. To utilize looming drafting from modern looms, the corresponding drafting plan must be modified.
