Introduction

This introductoy chapter explains “technology growth” or “technology improvement” to describe the acceleration in technological capabilities that has occurred, and, in many cases, continues to occur over time. More than 20 different technologies are considered in this book. A recurring theme will be exponential growth, a concept that will be explained in Chapter 2. The purpose of this book is to provide an overview of technological growth across various fields. We will examine the specific kinds of advancements in each field and the rates at which they’ve progressed and speculate on the reasons so many technologies exhibit this accelerated growth.
