Abstract

Chapter 27 explores the history, resurgence, and technological evolution of electric vehicles (EVs). Early EVs appeared in the late 1800s, with notable models like the Baker and Detroit Electric cars offering simplicity and reliability but eventually declining due to limited range, high costs, and the rise of gasoline-powered vehicles like Ford’s Model T. The modern EV renaissance began with Tesla, driven by Elon Musk’s vision to produce high-performance cars, then luxury models, and finally mass-market vehicles. Tesla pioneered advancements in battery chemistry, motor design, software integration, manufacturing efficiency, and charging infrastructure, notably its global Supercharger network. Today, most major automakers produce EVs, with China leading global production and India focusing on two- and three-wheelers. EV adoption shows exponential growth since 2008, though challenges remain, including charging infrastructure and future tax policies. Technological progress and cultural shifts toward sustainability ensure EVs will play a central role in transportation’s future.
