Abstract

Additional figures and tables that support and expand upon the methods, results, and interpretations presented in the main text, including a detailed field protocol (Text S1), Pearson correlation analyses for the full set of surveyed variables considered (Fig. S1), the distribution of 12 stream types for 164 field sites (Fig. S2), the distribution of variables used in classification (Fig. S3), decision rules for identifying artificial stream types and natural stream types by using a number of geomorphic attributes that have clear field meaning, the process of identifying the optimal number of clusters or stream types based on silhouette method and expert-based heuristic refinement (Table S1), and the median values of each variable used for classification and interpretation in each stream type (Table S2).
