Calculation of the Stability Characteristics of a Supersonic Boundary Layer on a Flat-Plate Model with Streamwise Slots of Various Depths
Abstract
This paper presents the results of the first computational and theoretical study of the influence of logitudinal rectangular slots on a flat-plate surface on boundary-layer stability at a free-tream Mach number $${{{\text{M}}}_{\infty }} = 2$$ . The slots have different depths (Reynolds number $$0 \leqslant {{\operatorname{Re} }_{h}} \leqslant 5400$$ ) and small width compared to the instability wavelength. The mean flow was obtained using the FlowVision computational fluid dynamics code. Calculations using linear stability theory show that increasing the slot depth shifts the frequency range of boundary-layer instability to higher frequencies, while the rate of spatial growth of pulsations becomes lower than in the case of a smooth-surface boundary layer; i.e., the flow stabilizes.
