Abstract

In my short stint as a resident doctor in oncology, the overwhelming impression was one of complex and expensive treatments doing little for patient survival or quality of life. The options available to oncologists were "experimental" combinations of chemotherapy drugs with or without radiotherapy.Among the list of instant rejections when I started at The BMJ later in the 1990s was any paper proposing a cure for cancer.Today, the sense of optimism around new cancer treatments is hard to ignore."Curing cancer" remains a popular notion, although the hype about successful treatment of "pre-cancer" and "early cancer" needs tempering.Yet the concept of a "cure" is debatable.Cancers return, relapse, and remain in our mind's eye. 5Abbasi K. mRNA covid vaccines: the case for harms is missing data.
