Abstract

Healthcare organisations worldwide face pressure to ensure their artificial intelligence (AI) tools are effective, safe and equitable. Although patients are the primary intended beneficiaries of AI governance efforts, they are largely excluded from governance processes in US healthcare organisations, which are dominated by clinicians, data scientists and ethicists.1 2 Our experience engaging and participating as patient representatives in AI governance at Stanford Health Care3 demonstrates that, notwithstanding the technical complexities of AI governance, patient engagement is feasible and valuable.
