Centering HVIPs within the community violence prevention ecosystem
Abstract
We applaud Wical and colleagues’ effort to center the voices of participants in Baltimore and DC-area Hospital-based Violence Intervention Programs (HVIPs), along with their loved ones, and program staff, in discussions of program impact on violence prevention.1 The perspectives of those directly affected by firearm violence are surprisingly absent from many assessments of HVIPs. And indeed, these interviews reveal a clear and concerning disconnect between participants’ needs and the services HVIPs are positioned to provide.
