Abstract

If you have taken a basic linear algebra class, you know about square and rectangular matrices and things such as inverses and factorizations. In scientific computing inverting a matrix or computing a factorization is still important (actually, usually when you need to invert a matrix, it is for the purpose of solving a linear system, and there are better methods for that than inverting the matrix), but the nature of the matrices is often different.
