Abstract

Climate science poses a number of uncommon challenges for statistics, some of which are methodological, others more practical having to do with implementation. In this chapter we outline some basic statistical modeling techniques that have been developed to deal with these challenges, with examples. We conclude the chapter by introducing some of the special terminology commonly used in climate statistics, including the concepts of proxy data, reanalysis, and model skill.
