Abstract

In this chapter we focus on the cryosphere—those portions of Earth’s climate surface where water is in solid form, including glaciers, ice sheets, ice caps, and sea ice. There is considerable overlap with the hydrosphere, but there are also significant differences; for example, viscous forces dominate the dynamics. As a consequence, ice flows occupy a special dynamical regime, which is usually referred to as Stokes flow.
