Abstract

An increased focus on sustainable Earth resource utilization, alongside a growing understanding of the impact of human populations on Earth systems, means that succinct and empathetic science communication is becoming a critical skill in the toolkit of most geoscientists. Despite the exponential growth in the technology needed to support the rapid dissemination and simplification of complex concepts to a wide audience, it is argued that it is ever more challenging to communicate. This paper summarizes a discussion that occurred amongst practising geoscience communicators and professional industry public communication professionals at the Energy Geoscience Conference in 2023. The discussion addressed some of the underlying challenges for communicators, including significant trust and knowledge deficits, alongside the role of education. A broad agreement emerged on the importance of communicating at a human and community level, the conveyance of a connection with landscape and planet as a means to truly communicate science complexity.
