Improved Implementation of Number Theoretic Transform on NVIDIA GPU with Tensor Cores
Abstract
In this paper, we propose an improved implementation of the number theoretic transform (NTT) using Tensor Cores, which are dedicated matrix arithmetic units on NVIDIA GPUs. The NTT is a generalization of the discrete Fourier transform over modular integers, enabling error-free computation of convolution and polynomial multiplication. To accelerate cryptographic schemes, one of the chief applications of the NTT, previous studies also employed Tensor Cores for NTT computation. However, there is still room for optimizations with regard to the instruction and shared memory usage. Through a careful analysis, we found that the matrix transposition required for in-register NTT computation can be performed at no cost (i.e., without using memory) by only swapping the order of the input operands to Tensor Cores. Because Tensor Cores support only up to eight-bit integers as inputs, we first compute and accumulate the products of decomposed eight-bit digits and then reduce the result modulo an appropriate modulus, as done in previous studies. For this task, we propose an efficient modular reduction algorithm that utilizes the properties of moduli used for the NTT. We compare the performance of our implementation with that of existing methods. The results show that our implementation outperforms existing methods for a certain set of parameter values.
