Brushing Up on Illumination: Temporal Coherence in Painterly Compositing in Disney and Pixar’s Hoppers
Abstract
For Pixar’s Hoppers, the artistic vision called for a distinctive painterly aesthetic that would give the film a handcrafted, illustrative quality while maintaining the sophisticated lighting and color work fundamental to modern CG animation. Traditional painterly rendering approaches often sacrifice illumination fidelity or introduce temporal instability—flickering artifacts that are unacceptable for feature film work.
