Designing Cultural Resilience as Practice: Participatory Design for Immigrant Heritage
Abstract
British-Chinese immigrants often experience acculturative stress that challenges cultural resilience, while existing digital interventions largely reproduce one-way acculturation. This study integrates cultural heritage studies and Human Computer Interaction (HCI) to examine how interactive technologies can support cultural resilience and mutual acculturation. Building on our preliminary research, we conducted a participatory design workshop with British-Chinese immigrants to co-develop interactive cultural prototypes. The findings highlight three key shifts in design thinking from user-centred to multicultural-centred design, from resilience as outcome to resilience as design practice, and from multimodality as technical feature to multimodality as cultural strategy. These insights inform the ongoing development of an interactive prototype aimed at supporting cultural dissemination, mutual acculturation, and cultural resilience.
