Abstract

Following the recent COVID-19 outbreak, numerous medications were widely administered to treat patients, including Cloperastine fendizoate (CPF), which was extensively used and subsequently was found to have contaminated water sources. In response to this situation, a novel potentiometric method was optimized for the enhanced detection of CPF, utilizing an ion-selective membrane (ISM) formulation incorporating CPF-tetraphenylborate ion pair as the electroactive component and o-nitro-phenyloctylether as the plasticizer. The membrane composition was further optimized to improve its efficiency. The sensor exhibited a Nernstian slope of 58.8 mV decade −1 , with a linear response observed over the concentration range of 1.0 × 10 −6 to 1.0 × 10 −2 M. The proposed sensor demonstrated satisfactory recovery in detecting the target drug within synthetic wastewater and pharmaceutical dosage forms. The environmental sustainability of the method was examined through the Complementary Green Analytical Procedure Index, the Blue Applicability Grade Index, and the Eco-Scale.
