Abstract

The common perception of corrosion is an image of a heavily rusted piece of metal lying abandoned somewhere, maybe an old boat corroding in a bay, forgotten by everyone, or a fence waiting to be painted. However, corrosion is much more than this common perception. It affects not only our everyday lives but also our planet and, yes, sustainable development. The term sustainable development has been used extensively in recent years, and there is an excellent reason for that. Growing concerns about the impact of modern lifestyles have driven many global activities in recent decades aimed at reducing the overuse of natural resources and harmful and unwanted emissions into the environment.
