Abstract

The single crystal of butane 1,4-bis (ammonium) hydroxy (diphenyl) acetate hydrate (BDABA) synthesized and grown by the slow evaporation technique at room temperature. According to the analysis of single-crystal X-ray diffraction, good crystalline order is confirmed by the fact that the crystal grows in the triclinic system with a centrosymmetric space group P-1. The optical studies conducted in the wavelength region of 200–1100 nm reveal the crystal to have excellent transparency in the visible region with a sharp ultraviolet cut-off at 235–240 nm, and the optical band gap of the crystal is estimated at 5.09 eV, which indicates that the crystal is of the wide band gap nature. Photoluminescence measurements at an excitation wavelength of 280 nm exhibit emission peaks at 284, 404, and 425 nm, corresponding to band-edge and defect-related recombination processes. Time-resolved photoluminescence analysis reveals a single-exponential decay for the 284 nm emission (lifetime: 0.715 ns) and bi-exponential decay for the 404 and 425 nm emissions. Dielectric studies indicate normal dispersion behaviour with low dielectric loss at higher frequencies. AC conductivity is temperature and frequency-dependent, indicating the existence of a thermally activated hopping process. These findings suggest that BDABA can be a promising optoelectronic material.
