Quantized Superstructural Exergetic Efficiency (QSEE): A Formal Exergy-Anergy Framework for the Analysis of Complex Systems
Abstract
This paper introduces the Quantized Superstructural Exergetic Efficiency (QSEE) framework, a novel thermodynamic and information-theoretic approach for evaluating the performance, stability, and degradation of complex systems. Traditional thermodynamic models frequently treat entropy as a passive byproduct. In contrast, QSEE formally elevates anergy (irrecoverable, degraded energy) to an active, measurable parameter, proposing an orthogonal decomposition of total systemic energy into Exergy (usable, structured potential) and Anergy (entropic waste). By establishing a rigorous equivalence between exergy, information, and physical structure, this framework introduces state-equivalence matrices to map energy transformations across multiple modalities (thermal, mechanical, chemical, electromagnetic). Furthermore, we derive a Stasis Indicator to measure dynamic homeostasis, and a comprehensive Failure Function that quantifies systemic instability caused by unsupported structural bias and cross-modal anergic interactions. Finally, we demonstrate the broad applicability of the QSEE framework by applying its metrics to data-center thermal management, biological metabolic efficiency, and renewable micro-grid dispatching. This framework provides a universal, quantifiable language for diagnosing systemic inefficiencies and designing for emergent resilience.
