Resilient PGM-Free High Entropy Alloy Industrial Electrodes Setting a New Performance Benchmark for Alkaline and Anion Exchange Membrane Electrolyzers
Abstract
The new generation of PGM-free electrodes (Pathfinder) developed by Adele Hydrogen set a performance benchmark for alkaline electrolysis (AEL). Incorporating high-entropy alloy (HEA) principles, they exhibit outstanding catalytic activity, long-term stability, and scalability. Independent testing confirmed superior electrochemical performance (1.67 V at 1 A cm-2, stable for over 216 h without degradation for AEL and similarly for anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer), outperforming conventional Raney Ni-based systems or reported layered double hydroxide (LHD). Physical characterizations revealed uniform coatings, robust microstructure, and surface stability even after long-term testing. These structural features directly correlate with the exceptional electrochemical behavior observed. The technology is scalable from 2 x 2 cm² to 1 x 1 m² plates and adaptable to various substrates (Ni or stainless-steel material). These advances overcome key limitations in alkaline electrolyzers, providing a scalable solution for industrial use that could reduce green hydrogen production costs and support gigafactory-scale manufacturing.
