Dispersion Characteristics of Saturated Sandy Sediments Measured by Dual‐Probe Method in the 20–150 kHz Range
Abstract
The acoustic properties of saturated sandy sediments are of great significance for gaining a deeper understanding of submarine sedimentary environments. To investigate the frequency dependence of sound velocity and attenuation in sediments, a dual‐probe acoustic measurement method (DPAMM) was employed to calibrate the P‐wave velocity and attenuation coefficient of saturated sandy sediments within the frequency range of 20–150 kHz. The P‐wave velocity in saturated medium‐coarse sand exhibits positive dispersion with a gradient of 0.128 m/s/kHz. The measured attenuation coefficients range from 15.1 to 48.8 dB/m. Both the experimental data and comparative datasets indicate a distinct nonlinear relationship, α = k f 1/2 , between the P‐wave attenuation coefficient and frequency. The experimental data show better agreement with the predictions of the BICSQS model compared to those of the Biot–Stoll model.
