Simulation‐Based Evaluation of Solar‐Wind Hybrid Systems for Clean Hydrogen Production: Insights From Hot‐Humid and Cold‐Dry Regions
Abstract
In the global pursuit of clean and sustainable energy, hydrogen production from renewable sources has emerged as a promising solution. This study investigates a green hydrogen production system based on a hybrid renewable energy configuration, comprising photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, and a PEM electrolyzer. The system was simulated using Homer Pro software, based on real climatic data for two cities in Iran, Mashhad and Bandar Abbas. Three different configurations of the renewable system were evaluated to determine the optimal model. The novelty of this research lies in providing a comprehensive analytical framework for the simultaneous techno‐economic and environmental assessment of green hydrogen production at a daily refueling scale of 24 vehicles. The results indicate that both cities possess significant potential for hydrogen production, while the performance in Bandar Abbas is superior, with a levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) of $7.14/kg and a levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of $0.1424/kWh. Moreover, this system results in an approximate reduction of 9180 tons of CO 2 over the project lifetime. The findings demonstrate that hybrid renewable systems can play a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels in the transportation sector.
