Abstract

Summary A new anguinoid of the genus Sychnotylenchus isolated from a dead black pine tree was characterised using morphometrics and molecular DNA barcodes. Sychnotylenchus asiaticus n. sp. is characterised by the lateral field with six to eight incisures, body length 1.03-1.49 mm, stylet slender 8.0-9.0 μ m long, with narrow lumen, stylet knobs minute, laterally elongated, median bulb muscular with visible valve, located at 41-51% of the pharynx, excretory pore located posterior to nerve ring, hemizonid located 18.0-37.0 μ m posterior to excretory pore, vulva at 90.4-92.5% of body, post-vulval uterine sac 0.7-1.1 vulval body diameter, vulva-anus distance 50.0-70.0 μ m, tail variable: mostly clubbed with rounded or slightly truncated terminus, sometimes broadly rounded or rarely with 2 small appendages, spicules smoothly curved 25.0-28.0 μ m long, bursal alae peloderan. The new species was compared with six related species of the genus including, S. kulinichi , S. ortus , S. abieticola , S. striatus , S. panurgus and S. autographi . In addition, a population of Devibursaphelenchus alienae was also morphologically characterised and its DNA barcodes supplied. The phylogenetic relationships among species were analysed using 18S-rRNA, 28S-rRNA, ITS-rRNA and COI gene sequences. Inferences from the four genes showed well-supported sister relations of S. asiaticus n. sp. with the closely related S. kulinichi .
