Abstract

Abstract This study maps and analyzes the existing body of knowledge on public service motivation ( PSM ) in socialist countries, using bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review. A total of 79 SSCI -indexed journal articles (Web of Science), published between 1990 and May 15, 2024, were reviewed. Utilizing the R package Bibliometrix, co-occurrence and co-citation analyses were conducted to identify key themes and research trends. The findings reveal a growing interest in PSM , yet highlight notable gaps in countries such as Cuba, Laos, Vietnam, and North Korea. The systematic review further examines methodological approaches, theoretical frameworks, lines of study, and antecedents and outcomes of PSM . Future research should prioritize various country-specific studies, adopt diverse methodologies, and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and engagement with local scholars. This study contributes to a deeper, context-sensitive understanding of PSM across varied cultural and political contexts.
