#EleSim/#EleNão: Musical Expressions of Otherization across Brazil’s Political/Religious Divide
Abstract
Abstract This article examines how Brazilian Christian artists act as protagonists in the country’s public life. Focusing on the increased polarization of Brazilian politics since 2016, it uses methodological tools from theology, music studies, and performance studies to examine the ecosystem of online musical artifacts and social media commentary that constitute a primary way in which these artists engage with the politics in the country. The article examines how artists not only align with particular political positions, but employ theological narratives to otherize those who stand in opposition to them. Finally, it offers considerations about how these engagements have changed amid Brazil’s increased political polarization, contributing to scholarly examinations at the intersection of public theology, society and culture, and politics.
