Anglo-American Women’s Participation in Late 18th-Century Constitutional Debates
Abstract
Abstract Despite the many cultural, social, and legal obstacles they faced, women participated in the American Revolutionary War and politics in diverse ways. The current article reflects on the role played by some elite and educated women in expressing political views, including partisan ones, not necessarily from a woman’s perspective. Particularly, it focuses on their participation in constitutional debates in the late 18 th century, a period when expressing a political view, especially in the public space, was considered inappropriate for women generally.
