Abstract

Abstract This article explores the screening practices of Mizo filmmakers and use of local OTT streaming services in Mizoram, Northeast India, based on fieldwork I conducted in the state’s capital, Aizawl. I examine three interconnected themes related to film screening practices. First, I analyse the hybrid ways of launching movies, on the local OTT streaming platform Lersia Play, as well as offline red-carpet premieres. Second, I highlight changes emerging in local film screening practices – a move from roadshows to OTT streaming platforms. Third, I examine the use of the local streaming platform to show Mizo films and how this re-shapes production and consumption of local films. The article highlights changes and continuities in film screening practices. It showcases the agency of the local filmmakers and how the use of a local OTT platform is resulting in a revitalisation of the local film industry by creating a dedicated space for Indigenous content.
