Operacja „Oluja” w chorwackiej pamięci zbiorowej: praktyki upamiętniające i wybrane narracje tożsamościowe
Abstract
Operation Storm (Oluja) was the key military operation of the Croatian forces during the Homeland War (1991–1995) and one of the most significant events in Croatia’s recent history. It functions as the foundation of the Croatian heroic narrative and a symbolic point of reference integrating collective memory and legitimising national values. The aim of this article is to review and discuss Croatian commemorative practices and selected identity narratives dedicated to Operation Storm, as well as to show how particular elements of anniversary celebrations shape collective memory and contribute to the construction and reinforcement of the national myth of victory. The commemoration of Operation Storm has become one of the most controversial, polarised, and politicised state anniversaries; consequently, the anniversaries of the operation serve not only as a tool for preserving collective memory but also as a frequent source of social and political tensions, both domestically and internationally.
