Abstract

This study explores the wear and corrosion properties of the composite material (AA7475 + 5% B 4 C), as an innovative alternative to conventional aluminum alloys used in the aerospace and shipbuilding industries. The AA7475 + B 4 C composite combine the strength and toughness of Aluminum (AA7475) with the hardness of Boron Carbide (B 4 C), improving corrosion resistance and wear properties over traditional aluminum alloys. The experimental investigation employed a pin-on-disc apparatus to assess the tribological properties by measuring the wear on the prepared specimen under specified conditions, in accordance with the ASTM: G99-05 standard. The input parameters considered were wear factors such as load applied, speed of rotation, and sliding distance, with the experiments conducted using the Box-Behnken Design (BBD) to test different parameter combinations. An empirical relationship was devised to predict wear, and its adequacy was tested using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The direct and interaction effect of the input parameters on wear were analyzed to determine its significance. The salt spray test assesses the corrosion characteristics in accordance with ASTM B117 standards. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed to provide detailed insights into the material’s microstructure and surface characteristics.
