Crammer’s Corner: The importance of empathy and compassion in GP consultations
Abstract
Managing patient emotions is a core component of effective GP consultations and is as important as diagnosing and treating physical illness. When a GP recognises, validates and responds to these emotions with empathy and compassion, the consultation becomes safer, more efficient and more therapeutic. In this article, GP trainer, Dr Kunal Chawathey discusses the subtle differences between sympathy, empathy and compassion and how these can influence consultation outcomes.Effective general practice relies not only on clinical expertise but also on the quality of the doctor-patient relationship.Empathy, sympathy and compassion are three related but distinct emotional responses that shape how a clinician understands and supports patients.Although often used interchangeably, each plays a unique role in consultation dynamics, influencing communication, patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes.
