Abstract

Abstract Central Java province successfully implemented a vector control program as malaria and filariasis case incidence was significantly decreasing. But the same efforts have not given encouraging outcomes for dengue as the cases still fall and rise everywhere. Vector control programs need a competent staff to be successfully implemented. Unfortunately, the number of public health entomologists positioned at health offices in Central Java is minimal. This study aims to assess the availability of competent staff related to the vector control program in Central Java province, Indonesia. This qualitative implementation research collected the data through semi-structured interviews. We interviewed 29 participants from various professions within thirteen institutions related to vector control program implementation. Subsequently, interview data were analyzed using the thematic analysis method. We defined two themes from the analysis: (1) The availability of public health entomologists is important to reinforce vector control efforts and (2) Continuous training to strengthen vector control staff in regions. There is an urgent need to make a significant adjustment regarding the availability of public health entomologists in each region according to the Ministry of Health standards. The regions need to prioritize investment in the capacity and capability of the vector control staff to accelerate the elimination of several important vector-borne diseases.
