Can Cancer Survivors Grow Beyond What Once Defined Them?
Abstract
A few years ago, I found myself in a roomful of strangers, poised over a blank sheet of paper with colored pencils scattered about. I was attending a class through the University of Michigan, and we were tasked with visualizing our past through the growth rings of a tree. We were instructed to start at the center and work our way out, labeling each ring with the defining moments of our lives. Birth, I began and circled. My first job, my first boyfriend, high school graduation. Next came college, my first day as an oncology nurse, my wedding. And cancer.
