Abstract

While in my PhD program in applied medical anthropology at the University of South Florida, I became interested in the concept of “punctuated equilibrium.” Proposed by Eldredge and Gould (1972), it describes evolutionary patterns in which species remain in stasis for long periods, with short bursts of significant change often triggered by environmental or climatic shifts.
