CO2 saturation prediction in storage monitoring using seismic velocity and attenuation
Abstract
Our research focuses on developing a rock physics model that predicts CO2 saturation from elastic parameters for time-lapse seismic technology. Specifically, we present an explicit equation to calculate CO2 saturation using P-wave velocity and attenuation. Then, we test the formula on two sets of experimental measurement data to validating the feasibility and effectiveness of this method. Finally, we apply this method to a synthetic seismic example. We use the full waveform inversion technique to obtain the attenuation and velocity models. Using our derived equation, we predict CO2 saturation based on the estimated models, and the resulting prediction error stayswithin an acceptable range.
