Distance and quadrant attributes applied to the Volve field, offshore Norway: A feasibility study
Abstract
We applied the DQ family of AVO attributes (DQ traces, Theta PX traces, and RDQ 3D crossplots) to seismic data from the Volve field, offshore Norway. Our objective was to test whether these attributes could provide new insights for seismic-based geological analysis in a complex setting with weak Class 1 and Class 2p AVO responses. The test, conducted on two lines at the crest of the oil-producing structure, yielded results that not only matched the positive responses seen in synthetic datasets but substantially exceeded our expectations in lithological identification, particularly in carbonates. The analysis revealed several unexpected benefits for geological interpretation, including enhanced fault definition and clear delineation of two scoured channels. A key finding was that DQ and Theta PX responses changed systematically with lateral variations in reservoir overburden lithology. This confirmed the ability of these attributes to detect subtle changes in the geological environment that might be missed by conventional methods. Despite the challenging conditions of the Volve field—a fully produced and abandoned oil field with complex geology and weak AVO seismic traces—the DQ family of attributes proved to be a valuable addition to the interpreter’s toolbox. The results demonstrate that these newly developed attributes, previously tested only on synthetic datasets, can effectively enhance geologic interpretations in real-world complex AVO seismic settings.
