Abstract

The earliest precursor cells of the germ line, and thus gametes, are referred to as the primordial germ cells. As such, their formation is essential for sexual reproduction in adults. The importance of this cell population for some organisms is evident by how early in development primordial germ cells differentiate – in some taxa, they are the first committed lineage. How primordial germ cells are specified depends on the species and its evolutionary history.
