Germline Stem Cells
Abstract
Germline stem cells are committed to a gametogenic path of differentiation that retain their proliferative capacity. These cells reside in the nascent gonad, where they undergo waves of rapid proliferation punctuated by phases of quiescence in response to hormonal signaling. The lifetime output of gametes is dependent on the germline stem cell population, so depletion of these stem cells results in lower fertility or sterility.
