Abstract

Oogenesis and megasporogenesis encompass the steps that transform a dedicated female germline stem cell into an egg or egg cell (plus central cell) that is capable of giving rise to fertile offspring (see Chapter 5 ). Differentiation along this female germ lineage requires contributions from somatic cells within the ovary, a specialized organ that houses the fundamental units of oogenesis. An intimate relationship develops between somatic cells and the primary germ cell – as well as its meiotic siblings, in many cases – that is essential for coordinating meiotic progression and hypertrophic growth of the future female gamete.
