Abstract

Sperm are derived from male germline stem cells. Spermatogenesis yields mature sperm from spermatogonial stem cells in animals and in cryptogams (non-flowering plants) whereas microsporogenesis is responsible for transforming sporophytic stem cells into a pollen grain containing a generative cell or sperm cells in angiosperms. As with female gamete development (see Chapter 14 ), reproductively competent sperm cells are produced through an intricate and intimate interaction of the germline cells with somatic cells that populate specialized male reproductive organs.
