Abstract

Meiosis is a mode of cell division uniquely associated with eukaryotes that likely arose in the last eukaryotic common ancestor, which lived more than 1,500 million years ago (see Chapter 1 ). The importance of meiosis is underscored by the consequences of its failure. Mis-segregation of chromosomes produces embryos with an incorrect chromosome number. In humans, this accounts for about 30% of spontaneous miscarriages and may lead to developmental abnormalities.
