Orchids
Abstract
The Orchidaceae consists of more than 880 genera and 25,000 known species, with hundreds more discovered annually. These angiosperms survive and thrive in many microenvironments, occupying niches found on six continents and at elevations from terra firma to the highest reaches of the cloud forest. Adaptability is thought to underlie the diversity within this family of plants, allowing individuals to colonize new territory by establishing critical relationships with local mycorrhizal fungi and pollinators.
