Abstract

The world currently hosts between 10,000 and 20,000 species of birds, living in climates found at and between the North and South poles and in ecologies from arid deserts to the (arid) open ocean. Some birds swim underwater (cormorants); some fly underwater (penguins); some are larger than a human (emu); and many share beautiful songs (wood thrush), striking colors (toucan), and human-like behaviors, such as “dancing” (manakins) and “talking” (parrots). Many of the Ayes class are migratory and travel to maximize nutrient intake and reproductive success.
