Abstract

Gametogenesis cannot occur without the assistance of a large cast of supporting cells that enable gamete development within the gonad or from afar (e.g. they reside in distal organs). Nearly all gametes are influenced by proximal supporting cells that are in intimate contact; conversely, the extent of aid provided by cell populations in other organs depends on the sex of an individual (e.g. female, male, or hermaphrodite) and where the majority of embryonic development occurs (e.g. within an eggshell or within the female reproductive tract).
